How to Read HVAC Fault Codes Like a Master Tech

Understanding fault codes is the fastest path from “something’s wrong” to “job done.” Every modern HVAC system communicates failures through LED flash sequences or digital displays. Here’s how to decode them efficiently.

The Flash Code System

Most boards use a long flash followed by short flashes. A pattern of 2 long + 3 short might indicate a pressure switch fault on one brand and a flame sensor issue on another. Always consult the wiring diagram on the unit’s door first.

Common Carrier Error Codes

  • 31 – Pressure switch stuck open
  • 33 – Limit device open (dirty filter, blocked duct)
  • 41 – Inducer or blower motor fault
  • 13 – Limit switch open too long

Trane & Lennox

Trane systems with ComfortLink II display full alphanumeric codes. E04 = indoor blower fault, E50 = refrigerant charge issues.

The FieldMentor Advantage

With FieldMentor’s AI camera, point your phone at the data plate and the fault code LED. Our Gemini-powered agent reads the model number, identifies the flash pattern, and walks you through the fix — step by step, hands-free.

Pro Tip: Always confirm the flash code with the service label on the door before acting. Boards from different production runs sometimes have different code tables.
